Sampson’s Monument Cleaned

Our brilliant conservators have been working on the monuments in the chancel for a number of weeks now and although the area is boarded off, I did sneak in with their agreement to take a couple of pictures of the work completed to clean the Samson Erdeswicke monument. Samson and his two wives now look much brighter and the surrounding heraldic symbols stand out clearly against their decorative backgrounds. The conservators are now working on the remaining tombs and the wall paintings. Work is scheduled to continue until May 2026 and we will keep you posted on progress.

Newly cleaned tomb giving a clearer idea of how it might have looked when new.
